New Bedford Half Marathon (2006)
The New Bedford Half Marathon in Massachusetts was yesterday. It is the first of seven races in the USATF New England grand prix racing series. The temperature was in the low 30s with some strong winds. The course is pretty flat, with some hills in the first few miles and one decent sized hill over the last mile of the race. There are quite a few miles with the wind at your back, but it was very strong and in your face from miles 9 on.

New Rule #2: Use more than one muscle at a time
Every weekend over the next few months, I am going to be examining each of the New Rules of Lifting from Lou Schuler and Alwyn Cosgrove’s new book. This is rule #2.
Exercises that use lots of muscles in coordinated action are better than those that force muscles to work in isolation.

Does time of day affect clarity of mind on a run?
In a recent comment by Scott, he asked if I found much difference in my clarity of mind depending upon the time of day that I run.
Time of day does not seem to have a big impact for me. How tired or stressed I am seems to have a bigger impact, as well as what kind of workout I am doing.

Workout Tip: Flex on the Pulleys
When using a pulley, you can intensify your workout by flexing at the bottom of the movement. For example, when doing a triceps extension, twist your forearms at the bottom of the movement so that your palms are no longer facing. They should be facing the floor. Flex your muscles before allowing the rope to raise up.

NFL Profit Sharing
The Norwich Bulletin doesn’t believe in profit sharing, and they use the Patriots as an example of what is wrong with the system.
The Washington Redskins were the top earner at $287 million, and the New England Patriots were second at $236 million. When Robert Kraft bought the Patriots in 1994, it was 28th among 28 teams in earnings. Kraft worked hard to turn the Patriots around.

Running by yourself is not so good
According to some research out of Princeton University, running by yourself has few brain benefits. According to Dr. Elizabeth Gould,
In the absence of social interaction, a normally beneficial experience can exert a potentially deleterious influence on the brain.
