10:20 pmPersonal

I remember now why it is that I normally lift weights at six o’clock in the morning. At 6 o’clock in the evening, the gym is a zoo. There are people everywhere! It is fit to make you claustrophobic. All of the cardiovascular machines have heaving, sweaty people on them. The tanning booth desk has a line of people loitering and waiting. The hallways are full of people meandering by. The benches by the dumbbells are all being used. The locker room is crowded.

Oh well, I set a PR in the squat today. I managed to lift about 15 pounds more than my body weight 12 times on my fourth set. Not that I was expecting anything different. If it weren’t so busy and I had gotten a better warm up, I probably would have done that in the second set and then added another 10 or 20 pounds for a third and final set. I was switching off with a guy doing the military press in the squat rack.

Have I mentioned that I am not a fan of my gym’s layout? Oh well. I think next Monday night they have free food. That might be worth another quick 20-30 minute workout.

Ultramarathon Man: Confessions of an All-Night RunnerOne of my goals in life is to run a marathon in every state. I do not have any interest (right now) in races longer than the marathon. I have previously written about Dean Karnazes when I reviewed his book Ultramarathon Man. Things do not seem to have changed much in his life.

His latest challenge for himself is to run a marathon in every state. Back to back. On consecutive days. Starting in St. Charles on September 17th, and finishing with the New York City marathon on November 5th, he is going to run the race course of a marathon in each state one after another. You can find more details about it at the North Face Endurance 50 website.

10:57 amWorkout Tips

When running down the road, you should always run facing traffic (except where local laws state otherwise) because it is much safer for you. Any time that you are a pedestrian and are not on a sidewalk or crosswalk, then you should be facing traffic.

You want to run facing traffic because…

9:11 amNews

Lance Armstrong is going to run the New York City Marathon this November. He has no plans to start running marathons professionally.

I have about a week to decide if I want to run it as well. I have an automatic qualifying time, but need to register by the end of the month.

9:28 amInjuries, Sports

Paul Tergat won the New York City marathon last November, and has been training really well in the lead up to next weekend’s London Marathon. Tergat had to pull out of the London Marathon at the last minute, though, due to a calf injury.
