Coast to Coast book signing next week
I just heard from Ryan Pancoast that he will be doing a book signing for Coast to Coast on Friday, October 6th, at the Brick City Festival in Rochester, New York. There should also be a few of the other runners from the transcontinental relay there as well.
You can catch up with the runners at the book signing, or pick up a copy of the book for $19 at the Brick City 5k. $19 is a good price; that’s less than you can buy it online for after shipping and taxes!
Win a trip to run in Kenya on safari
Adidas, National Geographic, GAP Adventures, and Kenya Airways are sponsoring a contest to fly a lucky winner to Kenya for the Safaricom Marathon. It is a simple sweepstakes where you give them contact info and they let you know if you have won. You can enter the contest or find the official sweepstakes rules at the National Geographic website.

Make friends while you are running
Always be friendly when you are out training. If you see somebody running in the other direction, then smile or wave or nod. If you come up behind somebody, let them know you are there by saying, “On your left,” or “On your right,” before you pass them. If you see somebody you could run with, then say hello and see if they want some company. It (usually) beats running alone.

I (barely) made the front page of the Portland Press Herald
A couple of weeks ago I was interviewed by a woman from the Portland Press Herald about my habits listening to podcasts, particularly the Phedippidations show produced by Steve Walker.
The article was published in today’s paper, and despite the article not being about me (it just includes a few quotes), a picture of me is taking up about 1/3 of the front of the inside section that it appears in. A small sidebox appears on the front page of the paper that tells folk to look inside to read the story, which to my mind means I made the front page, right? Both pictures are above the fold, even.
Very exciting for myself, and hopefully of at least marginal interest to you.
Maine Today.com has the picture on it’s home page (at least for the moment). Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear on the article itself. The home page article is not going to last very long, but here is a screenshot that you can click on to get a larger version.

Waterford Fall Foliage 5k
The Waterford Fall Foliage 5k was this morning. There were 136 finishers. Timothy Evan of Stoneham won the race in 17:02, beating Josh Rice by 54 seconds. Alison Stuermos beat Dana Welch by 21 seconds to win the race in 20:54.
There was also a 1 mile kids race. Seven year old Keegan Nelligan managed to edge out eleven year old Lauren Galley to win the race in 7:37. Caleb Fillebrown was 12 seconds behind them.
There were 47 children in the race.

Exercise Related “How To” Articles
The full list of “How To” articles from the group writing project has been put up over at Darren Rowse’s site. There are 343 articles total, many of whom are really worth checking out. The top five exercise related guides (besides my article on how to tie your shoes) that I found in the list are:

This Week Last Year: Mount Washington, Football, and Dead Boxers
This week last year was predominantly about football. That’s the sort of thing that is usually on my mind at this time of year.
I also wrote a short bit about gym etiquette that I really should revisit at some point in the near future.

Week 3 NFL Picks
Dallas, Kansas City, Oakland, and San Diego are not playing this week.
This means that half of my fantasy football team is on a bye, but that’s what I get for not drafting my own team and not trying to make any moves after I got back from my honeymoon.
I had a tougher time making picks this week. There should be some good games. I think that Jake Plummer is going to do really well against the Patriots, but he will not have quite enough to overcome them. I think Houston will get their first win, and New Orleans will hand Atlanta their first loss. It is going to be an emotionally charged game, and Atlanta is going to be very difficult to overcome.
I think that even with a bye week coming up, the Raiders are going to have a tough time not sinking further into the whole. Maybe I give them too little credit, but they have to be the worst team in the league. I even have Green Bay getting a win before them, since I doubt that they will beat the Browns next week. They are that bad.
