I've been attacked by dogs who were trying to hurt me before, and it is definately much different than one that's just being over-exhuberant because he wants to play. I have never felt the need for mace or anything; dogs are pretty simple and can usually be scared off.

If one bothers you and the owner doesn't take care of it, call your local sheriff and complain. Not only could it be a danger to you or other pedestrians, but it could get hit by a car or pick a fight with an animal tougher than it.

Wow! I'm glad your jacket didn't get ruined. I'll never forget rounding the corner in my neighborhood and the medium sized dog that usually barks at me from behind the fence was on the outside and unsupervised. We had about 15 second of back pedaling, avoiding the lowered head of the dog, and throwing punches before I satisfied him by exiting his territory. I thought twice about carrying some mace with me when I run. I decided not.
