I do not drink enough water. I drink coffee and diet green tea when I get home. That's about it. I don't get any calories from either. Well, not much. Maybe 80 per cup of coffee. I should drink more water, but I always feel so full after drinking two cups of coffee, I generally wait till I get home to drink more. Having been off the beer/liquor kick for a while, I've managed to cut quite a few worthless calories from my diet since July :-)

Thomas, I agree about it upsetting the diet. That's the consensus reached by the research, that you are consuming more calories than you are really aware of.

As for carboloading, I am not so sure that I would want to go that route specifically. Personally, I do not worry too much about carboloading before marathons because my diet consists in large part of a lot of pastas and breads on a regular basis. I keep myself pretty well fueled, and eat while I am running to keep myself that way. I'd like to see some research about how well the body can retain the calories in beverages compared to sugars in foods because if you wind up urinating most of those carbohydrates out then it will not help much.

If you do absorb them just as readily, then it may be a good method to both hydrate and fuel for your race. It could be especially beneficial the morning of the race. As always, test this method on your long runs before race day to see what works best for you.

In that case you might want to be careful when you're trying to lose weight, because the calories from soft drinks might completely upset your diet.

On the other hand, does that mean if you're trying to carboload the days before a marathon, carbs from drinks are the way to go as you can take more of them that way?
