Having run several marathons in my opinion refueling during the race was not necessary. Besides, if you are looking to run fast and have done the preparation you really should not need anything more than water.
In which case only a minimum amount of that should be needed.
If you are looking to survive then take your time and eat along the way. If you are looking to race, scrap the refuel and concentrate on the racing.

I agree with you that once you learn what works, it doesn't matter what any other great runners say. It took me years to find my magic formula for running and eating for any distance races.

Blaine,

I've done 22 marathons and only rarely refuel. I'm a bit like you in that I'll do 10-15 miles without even water. For me, refueling during the race isn't required. Heck, it's too difficult to eat something while juggling anyway.

Nice website by the way.

Wes, I love the half marathon distance. The full marathon is a slightly different beast; I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. I'll let you know when I have my marathon prep ebook ready!

Séverine, congratulations on getting into NYC! You must be pretty psyched. Good luck on your 30k trail race; I haven't done any trail races over 10k yet.

Well, I don't quite know yet what works for me, as I'm pretty new to this whole marathon training thing. I'm running my first ever 30k trail race this weekend, and will be taking about 4 gels with me, so I'll see how that goes....I found out last week that I got a place in the NYC marathon, so I can't wait for that!

At the end of summer, when I start training for my marathon, I'm going to try those salt tabs. My calves tend to cramp late in my runs. I did drink 32 oz out of my Camelbak during training and at my half, and I did eat some sports beans, even though I'm not sure I needed them. While I was sore at the end of the half, I was able to motor along fine. I plan on working out my nutrition strategy for my first marathon in December as I train. So HELP :-)
