My stress fracture is one of the metatarsals in my left foot. I am still able to do many other activities. May actually be good for me to focus on other exercises for a while. I am doing weights, cycling and I went to a spin class today. That was a workout!

Thanks for this eye-opener blog, Blaine! :-)

Unfortunately, I have been dealing with PF for a few weeks now. I have been icing, rolling the ball and stretching twice a day, I also have added insoles to my shoes (all of them) but I don't seem to see much of improvement...

I have kept running, or should I say jogging because I have read in Jeff Galloway's book that you don't necessary have to stop running to heal as long as you don't do speedwork, hillwork or racing.

I have also reduced my weekly mileage from 26 to 16 miles but maybe it is still too much... (?)

Anyway, I want to be able to train for the Mid-Winter Classic in February and my first HM in September so I am going to try to take complete rest from running for a week or two and see how it goes.

Thanks again! :-)

There's a time to struggle through an injury, and there's a time not to. Stress fractures are one of those injuries where it is best to just take the time off and get it out of the way.

Fortunately, most stress fractures don't preclude you from cycling, lifting, or swimming, so you can still stay in pretty good shape.

I had a stress fracture in one leg and tendinitis in the other leg back in 2000 before I ran my first marathon, and was probably back to running for only 6-8 weeks before the race, if that. My other activities had left me in good enough shape that I got my legs back under me pretty quickly.

You must have known I have been struggling with a similar problem. My goal race is not a marathon but a distance goal for the year. I have a stress fracture but also still lack 140 miles to meet the goal.

You have convinced me that I need to take the break I need and get healed up for the new year. I was at least fortunate enough to set a great half marathon PR before the injury.
