What other diseases except lyme disease can be caused by ticks? Should we take any preventive medicine?

Just a couple of weeks ago, a friend of mine noticed the telltale bull’s eye mark on her husband’s leg. He didn’t recall even being bitten by a tick. They were on their way out of town, but they stopped at a local Little League game to have a doctor acquaintance look at it. He and another MD both agreed it was definitely Lyme’s Disease! He got started on antibiotics right away and should be fine. He was lucky that his wife noticed the mark, because he probably wouldn’t have.

Timely advice. I’ll be running as part of a trail relay team in less than 2 weeks…in an area loaded with deer ticks. Gotta remember to be more concerned about those biting me than the helicopter-sized skeeters…
