Sorry for the late notice, I just found out that the 3rd Annual Maine Coach & Athlete Cross Country Clinic is today and hadn’t noticed it on the schedule before now. The past two years were very informative; if you’d like to read my notes on those clinics than you can start here:

This year’s clinic will take place tonight at 6:00 p.m. at the University of Southern Maine’s Portland Campus, in the Gerald Talbot Auditorium of Luther Bonney Hall. The clinic will feature talks by local coaches and health professionals on topics such as injury prevention, nutrition, and shoe selection.

The keynote discussion this year will be by Irish National Cross Country Champion Keith Kelly, a 6 time all American and the 2000 NCAA XC Champion from Providence College. He’ll be discussing how to train, prepare and compete at a championship level.

If you are a cross country runner or coach and will be in Portland tonight, then I highly recommend making your way to the clinic. I’ll see you there!

Jeff Galloway recently came into the Maine Running Company for the evening and to share his 50 years of running experience and 30 years of coaching experience with us. All of my notes from the clinic are linked at the bottom of this article.

This afternoon I’d like to finish up by summarizing Jeff’s thoughts on various audience questions that didn’t fit into any of the other articles over the past week.

Jeff covered his thoughts on cross training, overcoming injuries, and how his concepts and training methods apply to faster runners.

This morning’s notes are about what Jeff had to say about nutrition and how to eat to fuel your training.

Food & Training

“People tend to over-record their exercise and under-record their calorie intake…Imagine that!”

Fat is a very efficient source of fuel, but it can be a little too abundant of a fuel source that involves carrying around extra weight, which means that you will require more fuel to begin with.

Jeff Galloway recently came into the Maine Running Company to tell us about his popular run-walk-run training and racing method. All of my notes from the clinic will be linked at the bottom of this article as they are available.

The Run-Walk-Run Method

“If you conserve resources early, then they are available later. If you use them up early, then you pay later, and with interest.”

The major benefit of the run-walk-run method is that it gives you control over your fatigue and it allows you to recover extremely fast. Jeff has found that most people can go faster in their Magic Miles with a 10 to 15 second walk break in the middle than they could if they tried just running fast for a mile.

Jeff Galloway recently came into the Maine Running Company for a short clinic and to share some of his experiences. This is a continuation of my write-up on the event based on the notes that I took. All of the articles will be linked to down at the end of the article as they appear on the website.

Today’s article deals with Jeff’s notions on building speed.

Running Faster

“There are no health benefits for running faster. It’s only for the ego.”

If you want to run faster, then you need to do some sort of speed work. Jeff allows for a leap of faith pace projection for goal times to train for in a race by cutting 30 seconds off of pace dictated by the Magic Mile pace time.

Jeff has 3 types of faster running in his workouts.

The Magic Mile

“You’ve gotta remember, I’ve only been running for 50 years.”

The Magic Mile is Jeff’s way of getting a handle over what is a realistic goal and to know what your current potential is for any given race distance. He has now collected over 15,000 Magic Mile times and the resulting marathon times that were run afterwards, giving him a very good idea of what the different times can mean. It also allowed him to sort his training groups based on their latest mile time so that people would always be training with others that are in approximately the same shape.

Building Endurance

“The development of endurance is very simple. You just increase the distance of your long run.”

For any length of run, you can hold your endurance for at least 2 weeks. If your long runs are usually over 17 miles, then you can hold that endurance for 3 weeks. If your long runs are over 26 miles, then you can hold that endurance for 4 weeks.

This Thursday, September 18th, 2008, Bill Rodgers will be running with the crowd before giving a talk about running and marathons. He is a 4 time winner of both the New York and Boston marathons, and was on the 1976 Olympic Team.

I will be unable to make it this week, so if anybody wants to take some notes and write an article then I’d be more than happy to publish it here at Run to Win.
