Judith Smith & Kelley Wood, Photo courtesy of David Colby Young, Maine Track ClubHalloween is right around the corner, and with it comes the halloween races. This weekend was the Great Pumpkin 10k in Saco and the Rolling Bones 5k in Bar Harbor.

The Great Pumpkin 10k had 212 finishers. Dirigo had 3 finishers in the top 5, including a win by Josh Zolla in 34:32. Marjorie Graff was 10th overall to win the women’s race in 39:30. It was very windy on the course today.

Rolling Bones was a much smaller but much faster race than the Great Pumpkin. Only 27 people finished the race. Steven Dewitt of Ellsworth won the race in under 5 minutes per mile pace with a time of 14:56. Dan Balaguero of Bangor was over a minute behind him to take second place in 16:14. It was warm but windy in the mid 40s.

The Physical Therapy 8k in Brunswick, Maine went off this morning at 9:00. The weather was on the cool side, but it was a beautiful day for running. There were some breezes along the course, especially early in the race, but the headwinds were not too strong. There were 164 finishers.

Dirigo beat out PR Racing/Moose Milers by about 8 minutes, taking 4 of the top 5 in the race. Ethan Hemphill (25:36) and Josh Zolla (26:45) led the way for the entire race. TJ Hesler from PR Racing came in a solid 3rd place with a time of 28:08, followed by Rob Fast (28:26) and Blaine Moore (28:49). Marjorie Graff completed the scoring for Dirigo in 31:57, winning the women’s race by over a minute. Tiki Humphries (33:09) and Jessica Fortin (33:28) raced it out for 2nd and 3rd place.

Eliot Festival Day 5kThe Eliot Festival Day 5k was this morning in Eliot, Maine. The field was not quite as deep this year, but still saw a record setting winning time of 14:16. Pat Tarpy of Providence (formerly of Yarmouth) beat the field by almost a minute. Casey Moulton and Ethan Hemphill came through in 15:12 and 15:18 to round out the top 3. Rehima Kedir and Reba Naser of Ethiopa won the women’s race, coming in right behind me in the low-mid 16:40s. Kristen Barry was third in 17:14.

There was no team award this year, but Dirigo would have won it had there been one. Everybody that came down on both the men’s and women’s side went home with cash or hardware. Josh Zolla missed breaking 16 minutes by 6 seconds. Bill Mariski and Tom Ryan were the first masters runners in 16:19 and 16:20. I was a short ways behind them in 16:38, failing to catch PR Racing’s TJ Hesler.

The second of three races in the Craig’s Cup series was this Wednesday evening, September 20th. Dirigo swept the board with the top four positions. Mike Payson, Josh Zolla, and Pete Bottomley repeated their 1-2-3 performance from the first race on August 30th. Mike Payson dropped his time by 2 seconds to finish in 17:12, while Josh Zolla and Pete Bottomley ran 5 and 9 seconds faster in 17:50 and 17:52. Peter Hall came in fourth with a time of 19:17.

Emma Barclay beat Susan Weimer by 18 seconds to win the women’s race in 22:30.

The Dan Cardillo Memorial 5k was this morning in Falmouth, Maine. Dirigo racing club swept the field with the first five finishers. Ethan Hemphill won the race in 15:39, followed a minute later by Josh Zolla and Bill Mariski. Blaine Moore and Rob Fast were not far behind. Sheri Piers ran a 24 second course record in 17:33, bettering Kristin Barry’s time from last year. Christine Reaser and Mary Pardi were a minute and a half to two minutes behind her. There were 268 finishers on an absolutely beautiful day in the mid 60s with a slight headwind on the course.
