For the first time in 56 years, Bob Sheppard misses opening day at Yankee Stadium. He threw out his hip on Monday night and will miss the three game series against Kansas City, but hopes to be back for the homestand against Baltimore on April 21.

“I am very disappointed that I will miss my first Opening Day at Yankee Stadium since I began this job in 1951,” Sheppard said. “I am optimistic that I will return to the Stadium for the next homestand.”

Shepperd has been the public address announcer since 1951, and will be replaced by his backup Jim Hall.

The Sports Weblog has an article about the possibility of the Florida Marlins moving to Las Vegas. I just have to say that I can not see that happening. Baseball is not as large of a betting sport these days as say football is, but I find it hard picturing Bud Selig agreeing to allow a franchise to move there. It’s been over 80 years, and the White Sox are still being called the Black Sox after getting to the World Series this past year. Baseball is still trying to distance itself from gambling as much as it can; they won’t invite trouble and bad connotations by moving a team there.

The players union and major league baseball finally came to an agreement on a tougher steroid policy. Rather than a light slap on the wrist, players will now face 50 game suspensions for first time offense, and 100 games for 2nd. Three times, and you are suspended for life. This replaces the minor 10 day suspension that was in effect this year. Also covered are amphetamines, with lighter suspensions of 25 and 80 games. More importantly, though, is that the tests are going to handled by an independant 3rd party rather than by MLB or the players union.
