Maine Marathon and Half Marathon (2006)
The 2006 Maine Marathon, Marathon Relay, and Half Marathon was this morning in Portland, Maine. The rain held off for the day and stayed down in New Hampshire, leading to ideal marathon weather. A problem with the starting mats made it impossible to capture net times, however, so only the gun time was available.
Byrne Decker of Yarmouth won this year in 2:30:25, followed 5 minutes later by Michael Downing of Gorham. Last year’s winner, Matt Frongillo of Bar Harbor, slowed down 4 minutes and 15 seconds to finish 6th in 2:45:50.
Sheri Piers ran a personal best 2:56:40, but was about 3 minutes shy of the win. Dana Parrot made the trip up from Florida to win th race in 2:53:54.
The half marathon was a bit more competitive. Mike Payson won the men’s race by less than 50 seconds in 73:10, followed by Luke Wood of Saco.
Erin Chlumsky of Boulder, Colorado, took advantage of Kristin Barry placing 3rd in the Eliot 5k yesterday to beat her by less than 20 seconds. She won the race in 80:03 to finish in 11th place overall.
Dirigo had 5 finishers in the top 15 of the half marathon.

[...] I could not do it though. It was too much like banditing the race. Instead, I just ran around my house. [...]
[...] Sheri Piers won the women’s race in 19:41, a very strong 5k only 6 days after coming in second place at the Maine Marathon. She must have been reading through the archives here at Run to Win; I ran a 5k 3 days after my last marathon in about the same time. Susan Weimer placed second in 22:35, which got her first place for the series. [...]
