The olympic torch was stolen from the hands of Eleanora Berlanda (Italy’s 1500m record holder) as she ran through the Italian town of Trento.
“I saw the (protesters’) banners and I thought I would be able to pass by them, but they came near,” Berlanda told The Associated Press by telephone. “I tried to hold on to the torch but they were pulling on it, and my wrist was being turned, so I had to let go of it. They were aggressive about getting the torch, but not toward me personally.”
I am glad that Eleanora was not hurt, and that the torch was safely recovered to continue on its journey. The games may be corrupt at the top levels, but I still enjoy watching them. They just do not have the same glamour that they did when I was a child. Hopefully this is the last incident.
