The Barefoot Runner’s Society is organizing a 200 meter “race” tomorrow evening in Michigan in an attempt to set a Guinness World Record.
The original plan had been for having the largest turnout of barefoot runners at the Fifth Third Riverbank Run the following day, but required a closed course in order to be eligible for the Guinness Record.
So, instead of having the runners actually participate in a race, the record will be set by having them jog 200 meters, or half of a lap on a 400 meter track.
The “race” is non-competitive and won’t be timed, so hopefully they have a large enough crowd taking part that some of the runners will actually get to go a full 400 meters.
Before the “race” starts, there is a free barefoot running clinic that is open to the public. The clinic starts at 4:30 tomorrow afternoon, and the world record attempt will take place at 6:30 pm.
For those that want to take part in a real race, there will be a 5k at 7:00 pm as well as the originally planned barefoot presence at the Riverbank Run the next day.
If you’d like more information about the barefoot record attempt, you can find all of the details at Jason Robillard’s Barefoot Running University.
If you are into barefoot racing, you may also want to consider the Pineland Farms Barefoot 5k Trail Race here on the East Coast. This race will only be open to runners that are barefoot or wearing minimal shoes, and both will be scored in separate categories. If you have family members that prefer not to run barefoot, there is a separate race earlier in the day that takes place on the same course.
