The Maine Marathoner was last weekend and was won by Dan Vassallo as he powered through to a 2:26:54 in his first marathon. He beat Byrne Decker‘s course record from last year by 3 minutes; Byrne finished in 3rd this year, 9 minutes from the front. The winning relay team was the Dirigo Masters team, who finished just ahead of 2nd place in 2:32:39. Stephanie Crawford had a 9 minute lead on second place, winning the women’s race in 3:01:16.
The half marathon was a bit more competitive. P.J. Gorneault defeated Mark Goettel by less than 2 minutes to win the race in 1:12:24. The women’s race was dominated by Dirigo, with Sheri Piers edging out Kristin Barry by only 21 seconds to win in 1:19:49. Including Sheri and Kristin, there were 5 Dirigo finishers in the top 10.
It was a perfect day for a race. Despite frequent hamstring problems this season, Scott Hornney debuted in the half-marathon with 1:23:32, a time that is fast enough to allow him to bypass the lottery for the New York City Marathon.
There were a lot of photographs taken of the event by David Colby Young and Don Penta. If you know of any other photos, let me know and I will include them in the list:
