Today was the Portland Trails 10k. Two years ago, I placed fourth. Last year I lost by 2 minutes and placed second. This year I lost by a minute and a half and ran a minute slower than last year and placed 4th. The course is not overly inspiring; it runs along the Eastern Prom…
The Dan Cardillo Memorial 5k Road Race was yesterday morning in Falmouth, Maine. It was a beautiful, cool morning with a slight breeze that somehow seemed to turn into a slight head wind for about 70% of the race. Dirigo and Run to Win both had a strong showing, placing 1st and 2nd in the…
Kenenisa Bekele won the 10,000 meter World Championship race in Helsinki, Finland. He surged through the last 200 meters to edge out teammate Sileshi Sihine by just over a half of a second, 27:08.33 to 27:08.87. Moses Mosop ran a personal best time of 27:08.96 to get third place less than a tenth of a…
The Beach to Beacon 10k was yesterday, and it bears an uncanny resemblance to the Yarmouth Clam Festival Classic a few weeks ago. In Yarmouth, I ran the same time both years on the five mile course, averaging a 5:52 pace. This year at the Beach to Beacon, I ran within 1/10 of a second…
The 8th annual Beach to Beacon 10k was won by Gilbert Okari for the third time in a row. Last year he was the first male to win back to back. Lornah Kiplagat, who has been winning major races left and right, was the first woman to cross the line. Eric Giddings and Emily Levan…
The LL Bean 10k in Freeport, Maine was this morning. Ethan Hemphill won in 33:09, followed by Michael Payson in 33:11. Joan Benoit Samuelson won the women’s race. The LL Bean 10k is a scenic course that is not quite flat. There is a steep downhill at the start and around four miles, and some…
The 14th annual Literacy Volunteers 5k Road Race was yesterday. It was certainly a not cold day. Runners battled heat in the 80s and 90s on a course that offers little to no shade. There was a slight headwind in a few places that helped to cool things off. Blaine Moore led the first half…
The inaugeral Friendly’s New England Mile was this morning. It runs through downtown Portland on Congress Street, from the Roma to Lincoln Park at the base of Munjoy Hill. The course features a 70 foot drop, and they have been billing it as an opportunity to see a sub 4-minute mile. Unfortunately, there was not…
The Greater Portland YMCA Back Bay 5k was Friday night. Erin and I ran down to the start as our warmup, and then hobbled our way through the race. The weather (somewhat) cooperated; for a change it was not raining. There are rumors that this afternoon the sun even shone for a few minutes at…
The Portland Sea Dogs held their 5th annual Mother’s Day 5k this morning. It was overcast and it drizzled off and on, and there was a fairly monstrous wind at the start, but the race has been growing by leaps and bounds. Not even (slightly) foul weather can stop it, apparently. There were over 1000…
