How Do You Calculate Training Zones With a Heart Rate Monitor?

    ByBlaine Moore May 4, 2010

As a runner, heart rate monitors are great devices that can help you train because they let you know when you are working too hard or not running hard enough. They aren’t fooled by weather, terrain or your level of fatigue going into a workout; they know exactly how hard you are working at any given moment no matter the conditions. The problem, of course, is how do you interpret what you are being told? Having a pulse of 165 beats per minute may be an all out sprint for one person but could be a leisurely jog for somebody else. Here are a few methods to determine your best training zones on any given day.

Pittsburgh Marathon Threatened With a Ravioli “Bomb”

    ByBlaine Moore May 3, 2010

The potential microwave bomb that was diffused by the bomb squad during yesterday’s Pittsburgh Marathon turns out not to have been a bomb after all…it was just an old microwave with ravioli in it. The police thought that there was a pipe bomb inside the microwave, which was suspicious because it wasn’t in the casing…

    ByBlaine Moore May 3, 2010

Yesterday’s Pittsburgh Marathon was a little different for some runners yesterday, after the race course got re-routed after the lead runners had finished. A small microwave oven was found near the course with what appeared to be explosives inside it. The race was stopped for 10 or 12 minutes while the bomb squad moved in,…

Can You Run a Marathon PR Using The Run-Walk-Run Method?

    ByBlaine Moore April 27, 2010

At the 2010 Exeter Marathon, I experimented with the Run-Walk-Run strategy that has been popularized by Jeff Galloway in an effort to see how well it would work for somebody that can run a little faster than most of the people that generally make use of the Run-Walk-Run method. Jeff Galloway first shared this strategy…

Pineland Farms Trail Challenge Barefoot 5k Preview Video

    ByBlaine Moore April 26, 2010

This past weekend I was out at Pineland Farms for my “long” run (which, given a sore hamstring the past few days, wasn’t that long.) After the run, I ran a little bit of the upcoming Barefoot 5k race course without my shoes to get a good feel for what the terrain will be like…

    The Inaugural Exeter Marathon (2010)

    ByBlaine Moore April 25, 2010

Last week I ran the first Exeter Marathon in Rhode Island. Exeter was a little different than most races because not only was there a qualifying standard that you needed to meet in order to run, but it was a strict one; if you didn’t make the standard, then you weren’t allowed to register. The…

Once again, I spent Patriot’s Day Weekend in the greater Boston area and got to watch the runner’s enjoy the great weather. But I’m ahead of myself; the weekend started on Friday evening at the Expo. Since I’m not running I didn’t have a need to actually go to the expo, but I was looking…
