Nike + iPodNike and Apple have teamed up to create a replacement for bulky GPS watches. No longer will you need to strap on multiple watches, bulky global positioning system receivers, or small waistband-clipped pedometers. Synchronizing your iPod will also download your workouts to your computer.

The new Nike+ Air Zoom Moire is the first footwear designed to talk to iPod. Nike plans to make many of its leading footwear styles Nike+ ready, connecting millions of consumers to the Nike+iPod experience. With the Nike+ footwear connected to iPod nano through the Nike+iPod Sport Kit, information on time, distance, calories burned and pace is stored on iPod and displayed on the screen; real-time audible feedback also is provided through headphones. The kit includes an in-shoe sensor and a receiver that attaches to iPod. A new Nike Sport Music section on the iTunes Music Store and a new nikeplus.com personal service site help maximize the Nike+iPod experience.

FIFA is giving the goal line technology a second go in Liverpool at the end of the year. When FIFA has its annual meeting in Zurich next March, they will decide whether or not to implement the technology for the World Cup. They have not yet decided if it is an asset or a distraction for the referees.

I am still excited to see how this technology pans out. The test went well at the under-17 championship, and it was not the worst thing to ever happen to the game by any stretch of the imagination. The world certainly did not end in fire and brimstone, at any rate.

If there was a DNA test that determined what kind of sports you could excel at, would you take it? The Australian Institute of Sport has developed a few and is testing whether or not they can be used to help train their athletes.

Swimming is inherantly more risky than many other sports such as running around a track or hitting a golf ball. After all; if you work too hard and pass out, you won’t just fall down on the ground. You could very well drown. That is why most if not all public pools require there to be lifeguards present when you are on their premises. The problem, though, is that some pools have a lot of glare, and if there are a number of people in the pool then it can be hard to see under the water, and if the water is particularly deep that makes it even tougher.

So do these safety concerns mean that you should not swim? No, it does not. Especially if you live in Bangor, North Wales. They have computer and camera assisted lifeguards on duty, which saved the life of a 10 year old girl after she immediately passed out after getting in the pool.

My fantasy football league has always used CBS Sportsline, but this year we are using Realtime Fantasy Sports. My draft is tomorrow, and I will put a review of their website and the experience of using them at the end of the season.

Soccer may get a slight makeover as FIFA tests a new goal line technology at the U-17 World Championship later this month. The soccer ball will have a chip embedded into it that will sound a buzzer in the official’s ear if the ball completely crosses the plane of the goal line.

I just saw information about chainless bicycles for the first time. What a neat concept! Dynamic Bicycles has a lot of information about chainless bikes on their website. Supposedly, they are cleaner, safer, quieter, and require less maintenance than a normal chain and derailer bike, at the expense of being a bit heavier. I also saw information on the Outback Chainless Bike and a GT chainless bike. I have not seen any information about road bikes using this technology, although Dynamic does have hybrids available.

I started looking into chainless bicycles when I read a post about whether or not mountain bike technology has reached a plataeu, and saw Marshall Brain’s post about chainless bicycles on his site.

I would love to test ride a bike like this. Have any of you ever used one? What do you think? How do they compare?

The goal this weekend is to make a few changes to the website. They may or may not trickle to this blog for a few weeks. Basically, I am going to play around with WordPress and see if I can’t get that working (and eventually migrate everything over to that if I like it - permalinks won’t change though or will have redirects…), and I need to get something done on the main website itself with the workout log. My paper log has one week left in it, so I need to come up with something that I can work off of. I will put up a warning if I start messing with this part of the site, but in case it goes down that is why. We will be back up.
