Donald Drake was recently hired by Saucony as the new Technical Representative for the DC/Baltimore area. I just want to be among the first to congratulate him and wish him well in his new career, and hope that I’m still able to race him now and again and that he finds the time to train…
Yesterday, I shared some simple stretches that you can do before a run. As presented, the stretches are more like dynamic warm ups rather than actual stretching, intended more to get you ready to run than to stretch a cold muscle. But what about the advice on stretching before your warm up? This was also…
Stretching before you run used to be the thing to do. Then it went out of favor, to be replaced with post-run stretching or stretching after a warm up. Stretching a cold muscle can do more damage than you want to it, but loosening a muscle up before a run, especially if it isn’t practical…
There are now 5 days to prepare for the Exeter Marathon. If you are running (or are just interested in the race) then here is everything that you need to know about the race. If you are interested, I wrote yesterday about my own plans for the race as race day gets closer. Registration &…
As I write this I have 6 days until the inaugural Exeter Marathon. After my fund raiser in January for Camp Sunshine, I had a fair load of miles under my belt but no speed. I ran a 50k on January 31st, and then 1 week later ran a 10 mile race in less than…
Unfortunately, Catherine Ndereba won’t be racing on Patriot’s Day this year. She has won the Boston Marathon 4 times, in 2000-2001 and 2004-2005. She has a muscle tear between her spine and femur. The men’s race is also a little depleted, with current course record holder Robert Cheruiyot announcing a couple weeks ago that a…
A week from tomorrow I am running the Exeter Marathon, and in an email that Mike Tammaro (the race director) sent me this afternoon he told a story about why running a small marathon is better for him than running a larger race. I can certainly relate to his take so I got permission from…
There’s less than 2 months until the Pineland Farms Trail Challenge on Memorial Day Weekend. I’m really looking forward to the races this year, which have been expanded to take place over 2 days with a lot of new races so that your entire family can take part. I’m definitely planning on running the barefoot…
The Patriot’s Day 5 Miler (now on the day before Patriot’s Day, Sunday April 18, 2010) has 200 shirts and tickets to the Sea Dogs remaining, so if you want to save $5 and get the extra swag now is the time to pre-register. The race is only 12 days away. This is a fun…
After my article last week about How To Race Faster by Running Tangents, I got an email from my friend and fellow Trail Monster Alan Morrison about how similar running tangents are to running near the inside of your lane on a track, which I’ve copied here (with permission): Hi Blaine I’ve been thinking about…
